YOUTH GROUP FOOTBALL Graham Morris Last Sunday we entered the Heslington 5 a side Trophy. The girls’ team had ten players so we had plenty of substitutes. The goal keeping duties were shared by Lucy Orton and Jenny Hunt who between them in ten matches conceded only eight goals making some brave stops. Once again the defence performed excellently helping to keep six clean sheets. Anna Sharpe, Anna Orton, Charlie Parsley and Amy Freer shared most of the defensive duties assisted by Jenny and Katy Fergusson. Katy handled most of the midfield duties with Lucy Peel, Rosie Lawson and Hayley Harrison sharing striking partnerships. The girls were quickly into their stride and Amy was quick to support midfield and attack when opportunities arose. We had to work very hard for our goals, scoring a total of five. Two each for Katy Fergusson and Lucy Peel and one for Rosie Lawson. The goals were well taken and Rosie Lawson's goal was well crafted with Hayley Harrison providing the final pass in a move that started from the back. Lucy Peel also scored a notable goal lobbing the opposition keeper from 10 yards when heout to challenge. All the players tried really hard and there was some fine tackling and defensive clearances from Anna Sharpe and Anna Orton.Amy, Katy and Lucy Peel tackled rigorously in midfield and frequently put opposing defences under pressure and forced errors. Although we only managed to score five goals the team made several other chances that went just wide or were well saved by opposing 'keepers. Once again it is very hard to pick a player of the tournament for the girls team but I think recognition should go to a player who tackled, passed and used excellent positional play when ever she was on the pitch. Although she didn't manage to get on the score sheet Hayley Harrison's overall contribution with two assists and several near misses, plus her excellent running on and off the ball gave the opposing sides trouble all afternoon. Well done Hayley and to all the team. At the end the team won three, lost three and drew four, including one score draw which gave us a total of fourteen points and sixth spot which is the best ever finish for the girls team. special thank you to Seamus for carrying out the refs duties. Perhaps we can find another volunteer so Seamus can watch next time? big thank you to the parents for transport, looking after the various bitsfor mucking in to erect and dismantle the goals, but especially for staying to support the children on a very wet day! The cheers and shouts of encouragement were excellent and added to the fun atmosphere which surrounded all our matches. we must not forget to thank John and Rev. Nancy Eckersley and helpers for organising the event. DEFEATED BY LOVE
Many nights I’ve thought of you,
I’ve wondered if you could be true,
I’ve sat in thought and wondered if,
You were a dream or just a myth.
Many days have been lost to me,
I’ve drifted around hopelessly,
I’ve stood and acted as if marooned,
As if my heart had been harpooned.
Many journeys I’ve started out,
In search of what you are about,
None has ever been completed,
I’m left confused; energy depleted.
Across the winds I hear your voice,
I’m tortured by my foolish choice,
The string that tugs upon my heart,
I gladly put there from the start.
Yet still I miss that tender touch,
The words that mean so much,
The smile of such gentle surprise,
That reaches out from your eyes.
Many nights I’ve lain awake,
When did I make this mistake?
And now all that I can dream of,
Is how I was defeated by love.
