YOUTH GROUP TOURNAMENT James Ross Once again Stamford Bridge boys took to the field at Lord Deramore’s School for the Heslington five a side. Although it was a cold, wet day they were eager to play. The team consisted of: Nicholas Ross; Joseph Ferguson; Edward Dixon; Sam Broadley; Adam Harrison; Owen Foster; Danny Foster. The team was managed by James Ross. Ten matches were played in the rain, winning eight and drawing two, with the sun coming out as the final scores were tallied. We finished in a respectable second place which is one better than last time. The boys played in every position and even volunteered for the lonely goalkeeper’s job(!) making it impossible to pick a man of the match, as each boy put in so much energy and effort into the games. This was a real team effort and first place is definitely in our sights.
MOTHERS’ UNION NEWS
In the absence of Irene Keeling Maureen Fox took the chair at the Mothers’ Union meeting on Thursday 24th April. A Coffee Morning for Mothers’ Union funds is planned for Saturday 10th May at the Methodist Chapel School Room from 9.30 am to 11.30 am. Donations for the cake, bric-a-brac and book stalls are requested, also for offers of help on the day.
The Quiet Day for the Mothers’ Union members is on Thursday 22nd May at St Mary’s Haxby from 10.30 am to 3.30 pm. Please take a plate lunch to be shared. It was decided to increase the tea money for the meeting to £1 to help pay for speakers etc. Mr and Mrs Garlick were introduced and David entertained us with his singing all the old favourite country and western songs to the accompaniment of his guitar and ably backed up with his wife joining in. By the sound of foot tapping and singing along the way, it was obviously enjoyed by everyone as they took a nostalgic trip to the "good old days." He was thanked by Sylvia Ward. Tea and biscuits completed an enjoyable afternoon.
STAMFORD BRIDGE NEWS
JOANNE SIMONS
It is with very great sadness that we report the death of Joanne Simons who died peacefully at her home on Sunday evening, 27th April after a long illness bravely fought.
Please pray for her husband David, their children Christine and Ellie, and her mum Irene.Joanne's funeral will take place at Stamford Bridge Church on Tuesday 6th May at 1.00 pm followed by burial.
VERGERS WANTED
We are in need of people willing to give a little of their time to act as Vergers at Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. Volunteers take their turn about once every two months.
Most times they are not needed but they should be willing to be available to set up, act as sidesman and tidy up after. The job is not difficult and someone will be with you to assist at least for the first time. If you think that you could do this part in our church life, please speak to either of the Churchwardens who will be pleased to give you further information.
CHURCH OPENERS REQUIRED
We are shortly to lose a number of our "church openers" and need some more to join the team. The "job" requires you to open and close the church one day a week. For more information please speak to a Churchwarden.
PARISH AWAY DAY
Unfortunately there has not been a large response to the idea of a Parish Away Day and so, regretfully, we are cancelling the event.
BITS & BOBS
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
When Peter spoke on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) he didn’t deliver a well-prepared address that had little to do with his listeners! What began with the charge of drunken behaviour moved into a powerful presentation of the gospel. Peter’s message shows us how we can address the needs of our hearers today.
Peter’s presentation was fully Christ-centred, for he spoke of Jesus as:
fulfilment (16-): the focus of the history of salvation.
man and God (22 & 36): both his humanity and deity were affirmed. crucified (23): Christ’s death was according to God’s set purpose. risen (32): Peter was a witness to the resurrection. reigning (34): exalted to the throne of God. contemporary (33): present today by the Holy Spirit. In what ways does our portrayal of Jesus reflect Peter’s one? Peter Offered a Gift When Peter’s hearers asked what they should do about this message, he told them to receive what God had done for them (38). He pointed to God’s gifts of forgiveness for the past and the Holy Spirit as his presence in the present and pledge for the future. Neither of these gifts could be earned; they could only be accepted or rejected. As the church today to what extent do we present Christianity as gift? Peter not only challenged his hearers to accept God’s gifts, but also to begin a life of following Jesus (38). He called for repentance; a change of mind leading to a turning back to God. Along with this went baptism, the outward expression of their response to the gospel, in which they could say ‘yes’ to God’s offer and challenge. What opportunities do we have of presenting the challenge of following Christ today?
INCORRECT ANNOUNCEMENT
Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile atwho is hard to love. Say 'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much about.
POEM OF THE MONTH
Nothing is as beautiful as Spring -
When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;
Thrush’s eggs look little low heavens, and thrush
Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring
The ear, it strikes like lightnings to hear him sing;
The grassy peartree leaves and blooms, they brush
The descending blue that blue is all in a rush
With richness; the racing lambs too have fair their fling.
What is all this juice and all this joy?
A strain of the earth’s sweet being in the beginning
In Eden garden.—Have, get, before it cloy,
Before it cloud, Christ, lord, and sour with sinning,
Innocent mind and Mayday in girl and boy,
Most, O maid’s child, thy choice and worthy the winning.
