MAKE A MOTHER’S DAY
Helping a mum facing tough circumstances is a Mothering Sunday gift that anyone will treasure. This year the Mothers’ Union are encouraging people to donate a gift to those more in need than ourselves. Last year they raised £13000 nation wide and this year they hope to do much more. Each gift enables Mothers’ Union work to improve the lives of mothers and carers, and through them families and communities. When you buy a gift from the catalogue, you are buying a virtual gift. If you choose, for example, a goat, we can guarantee that your donation will provide whatever agricultural assistance may be needed to ensure a sustainable food source. This flexibility ensures that your gift can be used in the most effective way possible by tailoring the funding to supply items that will improvements to a family in need, including the expertise of the Mothers’ Union Development Worker in the area.
Some of the gifts suggested are: £6 will buy a tree which will bring long term benefits to many communities. £150 will help provide a mum in Zainabu with the skills to research and run an effective business that helps her feed her family, prove an education for her children and meets a need in the local community. £35 will provide an emergency relief kit which enables local Mothers’ Union volunteers to bring a lifeline of crucial supplies such as grain, pots and pans, sleeping mats and blankets, water purification tablets and mosquito nets – whatever is needed urgently – to families in adversity at the average price of a floral delivery for Mothering Sunday. £10 will provide toys and equipment in family visiting centres in prisons, child contact centres and parent and toddler groups including groups for parents with disabled children. Forms available from Irene Keeling. The closing date for this Mother’s Day project is 15th February. For further information, please see the notice board at the back of St John’s Church.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Will members please note in their new 2008 diaries the date of our AGM which will be on 24th January in the King’s Garth Community Room at 2.00 pm. The 2008 member’s diary card will be available on that day. New members, as always, are welcome.
BIG BREW 2008
Next year’s Big Brew is to be held during Fair Trade fortnight, instead of in July as in the past two years. We will therefore be asked to hold a Big Brew event between 25th February and 9th March 2008. Big Brew gives Christians across North and East Yorkshire a way of changing public opinion, and of demonstrating that Christians are not only concerned about global poverty but mean to do something about it. A Big Brew event can be any event where Fair Trade goods are promoted e.g. tea parties, family fun mornings, football games, concerts...… For churches already registered as a Fairtrade church (such as St John’s), a Big Brew event can help fulfill our commitment to promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade fortnight. The Synods of the Anglican Diocese of York and the Methodist York and Hull District resolved in April 2005 to aim to become registered for Fairtrade. To reach this status half of each denomination’s churches must be registered with the Fairtrade Foundation. The number of Fair Trade churches in North and East Yorkshire rose from 18 in January 2006 to 200 in July 2007, which is a great start.

STAMFORD BRIDGE NEWS IN MEMORIUM ALAN LEEVES
.
We are very sad to report the death of one of our stalwart attenders at the 8.00 am service. Alan Leeves was a lovely man who always had a smile and a story for you whenever you met him. He didn't talk about his age, but he was 91 and until recently had attended both our church and at Bossall, where he had been churchwarden for over 40 years. Alan's funeral was held at Bossall yesterday (12th). Please pray especially for his wife Margaret at this very sad time.
BINS OUTSIDE THE CHURCH
Michael Catterick
Having taken some time to empty all sorts of things (!!) from it, I would remind you that the BLACK bin outside the church is for SAND ONLY to put on the steps and slopes when there is ice about. It is NOT for rubbish. The GREEN wheelie bin is for RUBBISH though, if it can be recycled, why not do so by taking it home.

FUND RAISING
Andrea Palin
Our Fund Raising towards the toilet continues and we are now turning our attention once again to trying to obtain funding from outside sources. I am leading a small group working towards this. On Tuesday 19th February in Hull there is a days training which covers everything we need to know to set about this search, how to choose which Funders to target and how to complete the forms to our best advantage. I have asked for two places on this course. I plan to go but we would get much more out of it if two of us went, two heads are always better than one. The timing is perfect for us as we set off on this path and there is unlikely to be another course that fits so well. If you could spare this day to come too please get in touch with me. Thanks.

TOP TIP
Kath Miller
Attending church over Christmas with a cold, I suddenly realised, on taking communion, that it might be best not to take the communion cup. I was chatting to my mum about this afterwards and her tip was; dip the bread in the wine, then you fully part-take of communion and lower the risk of passing on your bugs!!
